Yellow cedar is a medium-sized cypress tree native to parts of British Columbia, Canada and Alaska, U.S.
Although it is not a traditional cedar, it has many names, including Notka cedar, Notka cypress, Alaska cypress, Alaska cedar, and phellodendri.
Because of its neat texture, sturdiness, corrosion resistance, and neutral color, yellow cedar is a common source of wood. Yellow cedar usually grows with hemlock. A typical yellow cedar grows to about 78.7 feet (24 meters) high and 24.4 inches (90 cm) in diameter. The trunk is wide and becomes a ridge, which becomes wider at the bottom.
The branches are evenly distributed around the trunk, sometimes extending to the base, and their appearance is often drooping.
Each branch has smaller branches extending from the main branch. Yellow cedar is the source of wood. The leaves of yellow cedar trees are usually dark blue. The leaves are very thin and extend in flat bundles.
They can grow to a length of 0.12-0.20 inches (3-5 mm), and their tips tend to be sharp. This tree also produces pine cones, which are similar to unripe fruit or berries in the first year.
As the tree matures, the pine cones will become rough, eventually showing a rustic, woody tone and texture.
The cones grow to 0.24-0.47 inches (6-12 millimeters (mm) in diameter and have several large scales like umbrellas.
